Grace must go beyond forgiveness (pardon) to the giving of a new and supernaturally-good heart. Otherwise, it is stunted grace. Simply seeing ourselves as a miserable mess - yet forgiven- doesn't help a person in the long run. We need a new kind of "real." A new authenticity.
